We said that malchus is above the other sphirot, and when it is revealed it is seen that it is rooted above the other sphirot.

The point is that since there will be full revelation of the essence and all will take its purpose from essence, so we come back to the question of why are the souls yearning for the level of 'kisses'.

The highest faculty in a person is chochmah/wisdom which usually draws from pleasure and will. But when there is a full revelation of the malchus then there is a reversal and malchus is mashpia in chabad.

This is like reflective light (ohr chozer) which elicits the root of sechel.

Yes, malchus is superior to the other sphirot, but in essence it is hidden/helem, and so for this to be revealed it has to join with zaah. This is where the essence can be revealed.

We talk about the centrality of having a home. The home is like the sphirah of malchus. Presence because he is present.

The essence of the home is not the function, but rather the reality itself. Nevertheless you see that the person is established in the home when he furnishes it and defines the various rooms (not when the purchase is first made). This is when the human dignity is revealed. Things have their place, and this convenience is revealing the human dignity. This is the unity of zaah and malchus.

'Kisses' are a reflection from essence, but they have a revelation... a revelation of essence! The kisses bring revelation.

We said that the level of 'kisses' is like the level that is the foundation of mind.

We say there is an essence that is beyond experience.

So the 'kisses' are a revelation from essence.

It is an expression of infinity.

Nevertheless the expression from there is only a reflection/ha-arah – it tell you about the essence – tells you clearly – but it is not the essence....

In the past we explained that the essence has everything. When we look at our world and you see all the developments, it seems like things are circumstantial, but actually all that is revealed below is only due to what is true above...

So too the effect of a house is far superior to just providing shelter – it is connected to the essence of the person.

But, you may ask, at essence a soul doesn't need a house...? The fact that the house has an essence connection is telling us that when a person is revealed and acting in the world, this is the real person... this is the level of malchus.

We have been explaining 'kisses'/neshikin. We have said that it brings out an essential element that is not contained in any kind of vessel/keili.

This is like the ohr chozer / reflected light. This is seen where the mind/sechel comes to a dead-end, and the student still has the essential human capacity, which elicits from the teacher a new depth that addresses not the student's sechel/mind, but rather his 'reality'!

And in this way is sensed an infinite faculty.

And it exposes not a quality of Godliness, but the fundamental reality of Godliness.

The kisses are rooted in the level called 'akudim', which alludes to the place that precedes tohu and tikkun... And we have seen the kiss came via the birur of tohu...

This is like drawing from the essential concealment (helem ha atzmi), which is above the level of concealment and revelation...

The essential concealment is beyond 'existing and not existing'. It is essential and 'cannot, not be'.

The human being is comfortable in the world because it belongs to him, and does not depend on what he does. But this is on the side of tohu. On the side of tikkun, there is the element of having an effect on the world, which is where he gets his full actualization... Fulfilling his mission is where it is realized.

The Baal Shem Tov says, 'a man is where his will is – automatically' and being in the world he goes towards his will in a disciplined manner. What enables him to take the steps to get there. He's interested in 'being there'. He draws from a level that is higher than being there and not being there.

This resolution is 'being raised up'.

We talked about speech today. We saw how the voice is related to the heart. It is the force from the heart that produces true speech. The heart is the seat of the emotions. Behind speech are the emotions.

We brought in this 'force of the heart' element to understand kisses. The kiss is the way the full power of the heart can come forth. It is a force that is too much for speech, but it can come out as a kiss.

The vessel is the mouth, but it does not reduce the power from the heart. Unlike the movement of the hand where the power of movement is reduced or modified.

This is like blowing – one who blows – sends force from within... In contrast to just 'letting the air out'... The force behind the blow is the nefesh/soul.

The kisses represent a blow from the heart that is beyond words.

This is accomplished by means of the resolution of tohu...

The Godly element is concealed by the world. When you break through that concealment it is a birur of tohu...

By this, the essence of life and kisses are revealed.

The birur/purification is the revelation of Godly presence – like when you say a bracha/blessing before eating an apple...

And the bracha/blessing is not just to acknowledge that He made the apple. Rather it represents a different dimension. It is representative of the fact that this apple was created specifically for us to eat... going back to the intent of creation in the first place...

“The Kiss of Love” p: 65

We have said that the kisses represent a love and light that cannot possibly be contained in a vessel/keli.

This explains why even after the the arrival of the time to come and the revelation of essence, there will still be a longing for these kisses.

The kiss alludes to something that comes from above. A kiss is a revelation of love that is impossible to reveal by speech. This is the power within the love.

The force of love cannot be restrained and shows itself as a kiss.

This essential light is not a response to an external stimulus. It does not come to fulfill any limited purpose. Ohr atzmi (essential light) says our consciousness starts not by being pushed by some or other circumstance, but from the One who made us. A baby is born with a will. And this is seen in its first cry... This will supersedes any stimulus.

We are born with a will. We are born 'running'... Like a parachutist coming to land, making contact with the ground while running...

The baby's will, is the will of its Creator.

'Essential' means not circumstantial. The desire to live has been implanted in each person... This is essential light, and it is not due to a reaction and there is nothing that precedes it.

The kisses do not come with contemplation – they are the flow of the love itself.

The way the souls are longing for 'kisses' is describing the way the souls will be in the time to come...

There will be a revelation of essence, so why would it still long for anything? It would already have essence...

All revelation and light is not an external creation – they are rooted in the essence. The human being has an essential purpose in the world. He belongs here and makes the world real.

There's a soul in every human being. A life force. Life is infinite – we cannot fathom its depth. Its manifestation is limited. Then there is a shine that comes from a person's face, which is reflective of the soul, and is not expressed in any form or action...

there's a deep joy that is constant. This is His presence in a person. It cannot be expressed in any particular form. This is what is revealed in kisses...

In the world, sechel/mind has been reduced to touch. We must get back to real sechel/perception.

The 'kisses' are a reflection from a higher source, that is channeled through the intellectual level (chochmah and binah). The soul, and Israel in general is seeking these kisses.

We are learning about things that can be surmised, not touched.

The chocham/sage has a grasp of atzilus, but his vantage point is different. A prophet/navi has full experience of what he says – he sees it with his own eyes and this is is vantage point. A sage who is not a prophet has the world of asiyah as his vantage point.

The Rebbe is saying that the effect of the ha-arah/reflection can be seen in 2 ways. There is a more profound relating to the essence, or a higher revelation of essence is seen.

Sechel/mind rises upwards almost independently of the world one occupies... chochmah/wisdom provides the platform and this platform is soul perspective... at the same time there is always the sense of 'that makes sense'.

Chochmah/wisdom is a stepping stone to binah/understanding...

“A Different Sense of Reality” p: 65

Souls are sourced in 'physical unions' which correspond to the emotions. When this is accompanied by 'kisses' which are from the higher level (chochmah and binah), then there is an affect on the gufni/physical/soul itself.

The kisses are a reflection of a higher level.

The reflection from a higher level, is only a reflection, an allusion, not the thing itself. But the effect of this provides a different sense of reality.

Connecting to the essence is the most significant.

So the souls vie for the union of kisses, since they enhance the experience of the grasp of the essence (hasagah hamahus). And it is not, 'I understand it' but rather, 'I get it because my Rebbe understands it'. This is a completely different level of hasagah... it opens up a view beyond...

Usually one goes from, 'I don't understand' to 'yes, I understand, I got an answer...' When there is a reflection from the higher source, there is no lacking, no question that comes first. It is sighting the truth directly.

Usually we say 'superior is the light from darkness', 'cos you find the light within your sechel/consciousness, but here we are saying the ultimate is the light given directly from the source...

This is knowledge without a process...

We have used a few descriptions to point to the reflection of a superior level, and how although it is just a reflection it contains a power beyond that which is contained in the essence of the lower level...

The 'kisses' that the souls long for, connect them to a higher level. It does not give them anything tangible. Yet it is more dear to them than the reality they have.

And souls are from the aspect of physical union, which results in a real presence... and so when there is a revelation of the aspect of 'kisses' also then there is the union of both levels...

It is like the Torah in the world having the effect of combining Godliness and world...!

The principle we are looking at is that sechel/mind, in comparison to emotions is of less substance... but the reflection of mind carries with it an infinitely deeper element than what is seen in emotions which initially seem more substantial...

We looked at the difference between a man's teacher/rav and his father/av. There is more honor to the teacher. The father brought the son into this finite world. The teacher/master connects him to infinity.

In a similar vein it says, 'more beautiful is the conversation/plain talk of the servants of the house fore fathers, than the torah of the children'. How it this possible?

The sons are the Jewish people, children of God, which represents the download of actual essence... and the Torah too is from essence... Yet still we say the servants' plain talk is more pleasant. And the plain talk is only a reflection and not the essence...

The reason is that the fore fathers are representative of chochmah/wisdom and binah/understanding...

so the servants' talk is a reflection of chochmah... as discussed above.

This is similar to how a chocham/sage is preferable to a navi/prophet. The sage is more important – he can give insights and directives that the prophet cannot.

Prophesy is a revelation of essence. He knows not by deduction. He knows directly.

The sage doesn't have that kind of access.

The sage knows the way the thing appears/metziut. The prophet knows how the thing is unto itself/mahus. Yet still we say the sage is more important than the prophet.


Prophesy corresponds to an insight at the level of the sphirot of netzach and hod. This is like the functional element of the emotions.

And the sage has a grasp above this.

The principle is that the reflection of the higher level is more important than the essence of the lower level. The reflection has a certain supremacy...

Thus it is understood the matter of 'kisses' for which the souls of Israel is longing. They want God's kisses. The kisses allude to something superior...

And souls which come from the essential physical union and then receive the kisses there is the joining of both levels, and thus is elevated the physical level also...

“Future Reality” p:64

There is a difference between world and Godliness. The world is a compelling presence. And Godliness can be ignored/avoided.

This is like sight and touch. You cannot avoid feeling what you touch. On the other hand sight is the easiest to avoid and eliminate from awareness.

Godliness is above spirituality and above world. It is known only to the highest and finest faculties. It is knowing without contact – similar to sight.

Godliness in contrast to everything else is not defined by its presence. It is a 'must be'.

Godliness cannot, not be. It is beyond any reason for being. It is beyond proof.

Kisses, relate to sechel/mind. It relates to the 'must be' level of reality.

Real sechel/mind deals with the undeniable reality. Not things proven in the physical level, but the reality that precedes that.

Wisdom/chochmah has such nullity that it can see the truth from the Creator's perspective. It looks not for proof in the created realm.

Zun – is like emotions and 'thought, speech and action'. It is the actual experience of human life. Above this is Chabad – intellect – almost a projection of the thing...

Chabad relative to emotions/middot is an 'observer' status. This is like sight vs touch. Touch gives you the object itself, and sight is an observation.

But something is observable due to a truth higher than touch...

Touch is the real thing itself, but sight is the thing itself, as the Creator makes it be...

So the reflection from a higher level (sight) is superior to the essence of the lower level (touch).

Kisses are a statement from the essence. An essential statement. Beyond touch. Beyond communication.

We are saying that even for essence there are different levels that are manifest.

This is like the difference between souls. They are all essential. Yet there is a difference.

Think of sunlight. It illuminates the world, but it does not become affected by it. It can shine on dirt and on gold without being affected by the subject. It always remains connected to its source.

In this way the light remains pure.

The whole world remains in God's domain, even after the creation of the world. You are an invited guest.

The human being in the world is the real guest. The whole world was created for the human being. He has an essential presence. And the world remains in His domain.

The sun illuminates not by virtue of its 'effort' but by virtue of its presence. By decree of God. This is an essence. The light of the sun always relates back to its source.

And this is like souls – they function due to the presence of their Creator – not on their own... yet there is a difference between them...
