Each letter is a specific faculty and vitality. They join together as a result of a higher light that combines the letters into a word.

The power to join the letters is from a singular source in the soul.

It is not due to the letters themselves. It comes from higher than them.

There are 2 levels of this – the light that allows itself to be contained in the letters... but essentially the joining of the letters is due to the light that is remote from letters and definition.


Letters have a physical presence. The parrot can repeat words. But the parrot just repeats the sounds without a sense of the significance. For the human being the words and letters are a means to express something... this is the light that is within the physical word or letter.


There is a light rooted in the soul that is the source.

A letter in a word draws from a higher source a faculty and a vitality (koach v'chayut).

And when a number of letters join together a greater message results – this comes from a higher source.


A person has different activities, and the foundation for all of them is a general vitality (chayut klali).

And this general light seems to be from beyond the level of sechel/mind that is dressed into the letters.

And it is is no way 'captured' by the letters. It is 'out of the box'.

What we have: an important yet illusive principle. Namely, that when you express a thought or a word consisting of letters, it would seem that the letters are devoid of sechel or light. The letters are not arbitrary.

Every letter is the revelation of a specific vitality and faculty. A letter is sourced in the human mind and soul.

Genesis: God makes heaven and earth. It is telling there is a Creator to your world. How does this change things? You're still in the world? The Torah is telling you that heaven and earth are not present unless you recognize there is a Creator for them – that's when they come to reality. That's why Avraham could find no peace – he went to look for the Creator and the significance of the world.


The speaker is focused on the meaning, not on the letters and words. When many letters are joined together to make words, there is an element that rises above all of them... this is a drawing of a superior faculty – a general vitality that includes all the specifics and is above them.

The student is way below the master. The letters and specifics are part of a worldly setting. The master unto himself does not see in terms of letters – he has the reality.

The ability to communicate the sechel/paradigm a higher level has to be accessed. A universal level has to be reached...


The reason there is a universal truth – or even a 'right way' to do things is due to being a creation of the Creator. And we strive to live up to that. I am not here for myself. I am here for Him.

The essence of the soul is where the soul talks of its Creator. It knows one truth, “I'm here not because I am here. I am here because He put me here.”

This [being His creation] is what enables me to re-create my ideas in a lower world – to communicate with my students...

I can communicate it because it was taught to me... to me too it came as a revelation...”

2x2 is not sechel. It is material based manipulaton or observation – it is empirical. Sechel/mind is the truth of the soul exposed to consciousness.

Wisdom is life. Life on the conscious level.

It is the hidden faculty of mind that will allow a concept to be presented and communicated.

Sechel relates to the truth of something. To the intent. This is the hidden intent – the hiyuli of the sechel.

To communicate a sechel, one needs to draw from the basis of the sechel.

The topic under discussion: the Alte Rebbe's description that each sphirah is 'download' of specific life/chayut. And that when there is a combination of sphirot there is a higher light that unifies them.

The metaphor/mashal for this is the master and his student.


The master cannot merely present the sechel as it is to him – it would be beyond the reach of the student.

The rav/master has to reformat the sechel to bring it down to a perspective that can be presented in the framework of the student.

To accomplish this takes a higher faculty. A faculty that is higher than that needed to comprehend the sechel in the first place. 

This is because the sechel is getting 'exported' to a place where the framework doesn't even exist. This is in contrast with where the sechel is within the master and is connected to the source.

Sechel is from the soul, but to formulate and express it a higher faculty is needed.

The master has to present and translate his perception into a way that is similar to that of the student.


And this ability to present takes a higher faculty – higher than the ability to understand inwardly.
