We are talking about light in contrast to transfer/shefa.

The light has a superiority.

This is due to its representation of the luminary itself.  It brings the luminary into proximity with the recipient.

By virtue of its presence the luminary gives off light.  There are no additional steps.  

Contrast this with sechel/mind.  There needs to be thought and speech to communicate a topic of sechel/mind.

Light is not a derivative of something else.  It is a creation in-and-of itself.  It is not a derivative of fire. 

An essence is not a worldly element.  An essence is a direct creation from God Himself.  Like light.   An essence by its truth encompasses the entire environment.

The illuminator is called an essence.  

Artificial speech is designed to say something.  Real speech comes to express something.  It is based in the infinity of a human being.  This is to illustrate essence.  As well as to illustrate ‘light from the luminary’ [ohr m’ein ha’ma’ohr].

Light tells you, ‘there is something more real here, than what meets the eye’. 

Essential reality is a divine creation. 

Everyone has a name.  This is because you are real.  As real as the world itself.  A name is a declaration that ‘this is really part of the reality of the world’.  

And this is based on the divinity behind creation.

When we look a the world, what do we see?  Do we see the tangible level or what it stands for?

Light is not like that…  you may think that the recipient of light has been ‘short-changed’ and that he has nothing…!

In truth he has something very special… there is a superiority to the light, although the recipient cannot work independently… and this superiority is due to the light being exactly like it is in the source of light.  

The illuminator has presented itself. 

Light gives the world a completely different dimension of reality.   The light is good.  Light tells you the basis of things.  

The light is reflective of the sun - an essential illuminator. 

You may think that the light which emanates from the illuminator is different form its source - this is not the case. 

Light is the illuminator in the form of light…  

The way to think of this is to  delve into the fact that the illuminator is not fire.   

The sun brightens the world.  It gives a new definition fo world.  How?  The sun says, ‘I am part of the world, yet my function is to provide brightness.  I am not a foreign object, yet I deliver brightness.’

It burns for 1,000’s of years and is not diminished.  It is a divine presence in the world.

The sun is the essence of light.

Light is intangible.  It is the opposite of darkness - the opposite of world.  

It moves everything out of the domain of touch and into the realm of sight…

Touch provides a physical effect.  Sight identifies an object by the truth of its presence.  A true presence is given a divine right to be.

Truth of presence is a divine gift.  There is no other source. 

Sight corresponds to chochmah/wisdom.

He strives to ensure that the student gets the truth as he sees it… and this happens via a fully personal relationship.

This element of flow/shefa is not a revelation of his own essence, but rather to affect [and to be affected by] the mentee.

‘Personal’ means being fully involved and showing you my reality, and what is beyond sechel/mind.  

And the recipient relates to and commits to the truth that is being revealed.

Man is never oblivious.

There’s a Godly element that is the beginning of everything.  And it is also embedded in the soul of man [nefesh ha’adam].  This is reflected in man’s sense that ‘things should be right’.

In throwing a stone there is an appreciation of ‘doing it right’, and in the act of painting there is an even deeper sense… a hergesh pnimi [an inner appreciation].

A stone can be thrown pretty well without much attention [after a person has developed the skill].  The mind does remain engaged on a concealed level.  The same cannot be said of the act of painting - the mind/sechel must remain on a deeper and more overt level.

The faculties have a certain embedded intelligence.  The faculty of throwing, in the hand, is involved in what it is doing. 

A person is protective of, and feels an affinity to, his handiwork.  

The activity of throwing feels an affinity for what it is doing. 

Nothing happening in the world or human being is ‘world created’.  Man is a divine creation, with a divine soul.  Thus all that occurs to, and within, man has a divine sensitivity.  There is a recognition of what it is doing.  

The soul/nefesh is embedded in the hand and the foot.  

None of the faculties has a worldly origin.  

Accomplishing is also part of the reality of the faculty.  It is not just a dumb faculty, it is a divine creation.

The faculties of the hand are a divine creation.  They are a living part of the human being, and is involved in what it is doing.

We are going to look at the difference between light [ohr] and flow [shefa].

The kabbalasits speak from the perspective of Godliness and they mostly use the word ‘light’.  The Jewish philosophers tend to use the word ‘flow’. 

Both indicate input from a source.  The word flow [shefa] - like water that flows - points to an identifiable element that is given from the mentor to the recipient.  Like the giving of a coin from the wealthy to the poor. 

The flow - shefa is due to the recipients’s position, not the giver’s position.  

A real mentor gives from who he is.  He gives over what he has lived through - he indicates not information, but actual personal terms.

‘Without beginning’ is a deep concept.  What in the world has no beginning?  And if something has no beginning what does it stand for?

And when we think about Godliness it is drawn from above - it is not based on experience here below in the world.  

It is beyond the usual sense of ‘knowledge’.  

So what is ‘knowing’ Godliness…?  It is wisdom [chochmah] - ‘knowing not by discovery, but how it is unto itself’.  There are no parameters and definitions.  It is known by direct connect.
