It submits.  And accepts what the Godly soul stands for… 

The animal soul is not totally oblivious to the bigger picture. 

The ultimate victory is in His hands.  And He will give your enemies into your hands - the enemy will be transformed and participate - a transformation from darkness to light.

God will circumcise your heart.  The heart might be very self-involved - focussed on self-experience - this is a covered heart.  After your work with your animal soul then God comes to help you with the next stage - the removal of the covering of the heart.

And this is the beginning of its purification.

Generally for the animal soul, ‘love’ has to do with a personal satisfaction.  Godliness is the opposite.  it takes you out of your experience and the world…

So how can the animal soul love Godliness…?!

It starts with an admission that, ‘there is something greater than myself…’  This is submission.  

The animal soul agrees to the humility of the Godly soul - it acknowledges there is something special - this opens the door to a love for Godliness.

The time of prayer is a time of battle.  The Godly soul overcomes the animal soul.  The Godly soul is provided with the power and audacity to rule over the animal soul.

World [and the animal soul] does not provide an answer to ‘what is everything here for?’  Only the soul has a ‘must be’ element.  The divine soul has an essential element. It has a purpose as defined by the divine will, before answering to the animal soul. 

Even if a man has every comfort in the world he will still ask himself, ‘what am i doing here?’

The battle is for the sake of the natural mind - worldy thinking, to comprehend the Godliness that is identifiable in the wold. 

It is His will to make the world.  Existence is due to Him.  The will is not due to experience - it is sensed in the soul/nefesh.  If this will was not contained in man and world it would dissipate into nothingness. 

This will is the initial gift of God to the world.  

Man from within the world seeks that which gives the world a presence - His will - and this elevates him beyond the trap of the world.

To deal with the evil inclination you need to go down to its platform.  The evil inclination has a clear path to connect to the revealed/functional faculties. 

So what is the nature of the confrontation?  You can change its interests - push it to seek what is meaningful - this is service by reason - reason is not enough - there has to be service - deep reflection till a new realization imbues your whole thought process.  

Avodah, means labor or service.  This is what He wants from us. 

The first step in affecting the animal soul is submission and nullification.  The animal soul has to go beyond being a ‘know-it-all’.  You first have to convince it that it does not know what it needs to know.  

Then comes the nullification of giving up completely one’s own reality… You have to curtail your own experience in the world… you will now learn about the world from a new perspective.  

How does the animal soul get to a level of humility/nullification?  He consents to join the Godly soul in her humility/nullification.

The Godly soul says, “I know not due to my experience, but rather by what is being given and shown to me…”

The Godly soul says, “There’s more to the picture than meet the eye…  don’t jump at what you see… know that it has been placed here by someone…”

And the animal soul agrees, “I have to be told what the reality is… I don’t want to rely on my own experience.”

Godliness comes down to the level of affecting the defined faculties and elements… and here there can be a battle… here on the level of function…

As the levels become more defined, the light becomes reduced.  At the lowest level - at the level of action the light is extremely reduced.  It is at this low level that the external forces will present their opposition.

How can there be a war?  The Godly soul is on a supreme level - how can it be affected.  At the level of essence, the war does indeed not exist.

So where is warfare?  This is fought on the level of inner faculties - the faculties that are enclothed in the defined, functional and conscious levels of man.

The triumph is the testimony that, ‘tho defined, this is a divine deed and the external forces being force to follow the lead of the divine purpose.

There is a war with the animal soul.

And you ‘go out to war’… this ‘going out’ alludes to the principle that as long as you have the cognizance of the ohr makif there is no war. 

Initially God made light, and not a luminary.  Light is a primary creation and not a secondary effect.

A real bright room, or a bright world, ‘shows itself to you’ [as opposed to being illuminated]. 

Things become bright if the essence of light is present.  

Then things ‘show themselves’ to you.

Ohr Makif is the presence of this essence.

Light is that which brings the presence of the Source of light.  And thereby things show themselves to you.

Light represents the luminary.  And there are two aspects i] being owned by the luminary, and ii] an internalized light - it tells you not just, ‘i am here’ but how you relate to it. 

Light is a very unique reality.  It exists only due to the source.  The light rules the area.

The surrounding light is the foundation of the internal levels [ohr pnimi].

On entering an empty home you see that people live here.  By contrast if you see a man in his home you have a ‘first hand’ experience that someone lives here.

These are 2 ways of knowing.

In the first case no-one is present.  Your sense of this being someone’s home is not as direct as if you see the occupant himself.

The Creator of the world has granted the human being a place to live.  It is his not due to occupation.  The whole presence of the world announces this. 

A house on Mars is an imitation.  A house on Earth is the real thing - the Divine creation. 

God creates on the basis of the spirit - the true foundation.  

There is an inherent reality and all that occurs is only a manifestation of this. 

All that man does, is a revelation of what the earth is and what God has created. 

The surrounding light [makif] is the inherent reality - as opposed to the manifest.  The initial concept is the makif - the true basis.   

Makif means the inherent reality that is representative of its source.  

Man represents the divine presence in the world and has an inherent reality.  

Makif represents the Source of sources. 

You cannot create something with out a point.  The point is His imprint of truth.

They cannot suck life from it. 

If the motive is for Him, and not for any ulterior motive, then there is no possibility of war - the simple undefined will is revealed, and no opposition can gain any footing - there is too much light.

In the world of action, there are ‘stand-alone’ entities  -  defined, discrete elements.  It is the surrounding element that gives all of this purpose and real being.  

It is His presence that gives legitimacy to everything happening. 

And when you fight your animal soul - your animalistic tendency

The principle we are dealing with:  there is the infinity light and all that comes later to make creation.

But the infinite light contains all these aspects in complete equality.

Light remains light at any level.

Light means the world sees itself as divine.

You get up in the morning and see the sky and the morning light - you see the infinity in the world.  

Even at the level of definition and limitation it still retains the quality of being ohr/light.

It presents itself effortlessly.

It presents as representing the Source.  Like sunlight cannot be present without the sun. 

Art: the artist seem something that the camera does not see.  The artist see the divinity of the object - he sees the compelling element of it.  

The artist sees what He is trying to show.  

The infinite relates to the finite.  He has provided deeds/mitzvoth that are done on the limited physical level.

Light exposes an object not as it exists, but at it is.

Will / ratzon presents that life is real and wants to participate.  It bring the vigor to his life.

The human is perfect.  Created by God.  Man is not a composite.

Know there is a First Being.  It is an imperative.  Why?  It is not just an element of divine service.  It is the basis of wisdom [chochmah].  

Existence per se makes no sense.  Existence makes sense to the mind [sechel] only if there is Something that brought it into existence.  So the definition of an existence is, ‘this is being presented to us’.  Knowledge in a vacuum is not knowledge. 

We know a thing via the One who alerts us to its being.  

Each thing represents what preceded it.

In the level of internal light there are differences of level and definition. 

Everything needs an overall environment.  The surrounding light [ohr makif] provides this.  Sechel/mind too requires an environment. 

This level hovers above and is not affected. 

This level is also know as the crown [kesser]. 

The crown of the world of action [kesser d’asiya]:  even action has a crown.  The simple planning of the layout of the furnishings of a home are still on the conceptual level, then there is the moment of introducing the actual physical furniture into the room.  

The moment of action has its own crown.

The completion of a project, the moment of completing the purpose of a home, or Moses’ final act of building the sanctuary [mishkan] makes the crown.  This is the crown of the level of action.

Our knowledge does not start with a vacuum.  We start from knowing - from this super knowledge.

Our work is to incorporate the principle of the First Being in our daily lives.

The inner light correlates to every situation.  It changes to meet every level and circumstance, yet it is called a ‘light’.  

And light per se is representative of its source - of essence. 

Sechel/mind also has a similar quality.  And you may think it is circumstantial.  But we are talking of inner light.  It remains essential.
