The is a simple light that represents Him purely.  It does not have different levels.

This light encompasses all levels equally.

This is like in the body of man: there are different faculties - but surrounding that is ‘human life itself’!  There is a human essence, and then there are his faculties.

We have seen that there are 2 souls.  The Godly and the animal soul. 

By means of battle the animal soul submits to the Godly soul.

The animal soul is confronted till it submits.  The most challenging element is the submission of the animal soul.

The element that brings the submission is super-worldly.  It is beyond you.  

You need to keep in mind that it is not yours.  It is given to you.  

The victory is His.  He renders the animal soul into the hands of the Godly soul.  It is a super-worldly triumph.

You come to the promised land, because He gives it to you.

After the initial submission of the animal soul to the Godly soul, there is another stage. 

The second stage is transformative [his-hafcha]

This circumcision removes the worldly covering.  Godly attributes become revealed.  Initially the animal soul is aware of itself - and then comes the second stage - where God opens the door - and here only Godliness is seen. 

There is a love and reality that surfaces that is beyond explanation.  This is like faith [emunah] in contrast to wisdom [chochmah]. 

This [second stage] is a gift from above.  Darkness is transformed into light. 

The heart goes the essence of life - essence beyond forms.  

Divine presence is not based in its form…!

It is not known by contrast.  It is known by virtue of omnipresence, it cannot be, but present.  This is a gift from above.  

Your struggle from below enables you to accept a great gift from above.

The animal soul submits, but lacks an inner perception.  Its interests remain unchanged.

How is submission possible.  How does one forgo one’s reality.  And if there’s real submission, who’s really there to keep functioning? 

What does Godly mean in contrast to ‘worldly’?  For things worldly we project, ‘what it looks like’.   The Godly is not made of any ‘building material’.  It is intangible.

The essence is initiated by God himself, beyond any worldly basis. 

With the element of makif, the Godly soul is not self-motivated, but because, ‘God wants it’.  No longer is anything base on its own preference.

The battle between the animal and Godly soul is decided at a higher level - a higher light is brought forth - this is the makif - ‘surrounding’ element.  

There is recognition of ‘who he is fighting for’. 

This subdues the animal soul.  

It submits.  And accepts what the Godly soul stands for… 

The animal soul is not totally oblivious to the bigger picture. 

The ultimate victory is in His hands.  And He will give your enemies into your hands - the enemy will be transformed and participate - a transformation from darkness to light.

God will circumcise your heart.  The heart might be very self-involved - focussed on self-experience - this is a covered heart.  After your work with your animal soul then God comes to help you with the next stage - the removal of the covering of the heart.

This is a great breakthrough…  and a tremendous elevation for it.

Everything is a divine creation - it has no beginning except for Godliness - the ‘beginning’ is what gives it an impetus and a place for being…

And the animal soul is shown by the Godly soul that even its own beginning is the Godly element… and the animal agrees… it is no longer exclusively focussed on itself… 

And this is the beginning of its purification.   

The animal soul also wants to relate to its own beginning, and it does this through humility…

Generally for the animal soul, ‘love’ has to do with a personal satisfaction.  Godliness is the opposite.  it takes you out of your experience and the world…

So how can the animal soul love Godliness…?!

It starts with an admission that, ‘there is something greater than myself…’  This is submission.  

The animal soul agrees to the humility of the Godly soul - it acknowledges there is something special - this opens the door to a love for Godliness.

The time of prayer is a time of battle.  The Godly soul overcomes the animal soul.  The Godly soul is provided with the power and audacity to rule over the animal soul.

World [and the animal soul] does not provide an answer to ‘what is everything here for?’  Only the soul has a ‘must be’ element.  The divine soul has an essential element. It has a purpose as defined by the divine will, before answering to the animal soul. 

Even if a man has every comfort in the world he will still ask himself, ‘what am i doing here?’

At the level of specific defined function, there the external forces gain a foot-hold. 

And there the refinement of the animal soul occurs.  The real purpose of the animal soul and defined faculties become manifest.

The battle is for the sake of the natural mind - worldy thinking, to comprehend the Godliness that is identifiable in the wold. 

It is His will to make the world.  Existence is due to Him.  The will is not due to experience - it is sensed in the soul/nefesh.  If this will was not contained in man and world it would dissipate into nothingness. 

This will is the initial gift of God to the world.  

Man from within the world seeks that which gives the world a presence - His will - and this elevates him beyond the trap of the world.

To deal with the evil inclination you need to go down to its platform.  The evil inclination has a clear path to connect to the revealed/functional faculties. 

So what is the nature of the confrontation?  You can change its interests - push it to seek what is meaningful - this is service by reason - reason is not enough - there has to be service - deep reflection till a new realization imbues your whole thought process.  

Avodah, means labor or service.  This is what He wants from us. 

The first step in affecting the animal soul is submission and nullification.  The animal soul has to go beyond being a ‘know-it-all’.  You first have to convince it that it does not know what it needs to know.  

Then comes the nullification of giving up completely one’s own reality… You have to curtail your own experience in the world… you will now learn about the world from a new perspective.  

How does the animal soul get to a level of humility/nullification?  He consents to join the Godly soul in her humility/nullification.

The Godly soul says, “I know not due to my experience, but rather by what is being given and shown to me…”

The Godly soul says, “There’s more to the picture than meet the eye…  don’t jump at what you see… know that it has been placed here by someone…”

And the animal soul agrees, “I have to be told what the reality is… I don’t want to rely on my own experience.”

As humans we create things in a gradual, procedural way.  God makes us and the world in one shot - not piecemeal - this is the reality itself.  

He presents the world to us gradually [creation over 7 days] so that we could relate to it - but from his side He does it all in one instant.

The work is to show the inner animal [the nefesh habahamit] all the things it can relate to and then show how they are sourced in divine reality.  Take way the divine reality and they will cease to exist…

The divine truth loses its beauty when it comes down to the low functional level.  And this is where the external forces have a claim and put up an opposition.

At the higher level where there is more light they are blinded.  There’s no functional aspect and they have no grasp. 

Our service of God that is beyond reason, indicates the level known as makif/surrounding light.

Godliness comes down to the level of affecting the defined faculties and elements… and here there can be a battle… here on the level of function…

At the level of stripped down functionality there is a war - the animal soul says let’s go this way, and the Godly soul says ‘I don’t want to go…!’

As the levels become more defined, the light becomes reduced.  At the lowest level - at the level of action the light is extremely reduced.  It is at this low level that the external forces will present their opposition.

There is a war with the animal soul.

The Godly soul is in a war with the animal soul.

How can there be a war?  The Godly soul is on a supreme level - how can it be affected.  At the level of essence, the war does indeed not exist.

So where is warfare?  This is fought on the level of inner faculties - the faculties that are enclothed in the defined, functional and conscious levels of man.

The triumph is the testimony that, ‘tho defined, this is a divine deed and the external forces being force to follow the lead of the divine purpose.

There is a war with the animal soul.

And you ‘go out to war’… this ‘going out’ alludes to the principle that as long as you have the cognizance of the ohr makif there is no war. 

Initially God made light, and not a luminary.  Light is a primary creation and not a secondary effect.

A real bright room, or a bright world, ‘shows itself to you’ [as opposed to being illuminated]. 

Things become bright if the essence of light is present.  

Then things ‘show themselves’ to you.

Ohr Makif is the presence of this essence.

Light is that which brings the presence of the Source of light.  And thereby things show themselves to you.

Light represents the luminary.  And there are two aspects i] being owned by the luminary, and ii] an internalized light - it tells you not just, ‘i am here’ but how you relate to it. 

Light is a very unique reality.  It exists only due to the source.  The light rules the area.

The surrounding light is the foundation of the internal levels [ohr pnimi].

On entering an empty home you see that people live here.  By contrast if you see a man in his home you have a ‘first hand’ experience that someone lives here.

These are 2 ways of knowing.

In the first case no-one is present.  Your sense of this being someone’s home is not as direct as if you see the occupant himself.

The Creator of the world has granted the human being a place to live.  It is his not due to occupation.  The whole presence of the world announces this. 

A house on Mars is an imitation.  A house on Earth is the real thing - the Divine creation. 

God creates on the basis of the spirit - the true foundation.  

There is an inherent reality and all that occurs is only a manifestation of this. 

All that man does, is a revelation of what the earth is and what God has created. 

The surrounding light [makif] is the inherent reality - as opposed to the manifest.  The initial concept is the makif - the true basis.   

Makif means the inherent reality that is representative of its source.  

Man represents the divine presence in the world and has an inherent reality.  

Makif represents the Source of sources. 

You cannot create something with out a point.  The point is His imprint of truth.
