“Foundational Light” p:72(15)

AyinBase / Ayin Beis with R' Paltiel 19 Kislev 5775

Page 72(15)

At second paragraph – (line begins: 've-hinay...') For text see below.

The metaphor for chochmah/wisdom is sight. The principle of sight, in contrast to touch... In touch you deal with one object at a time. The reality is very qualified. On the other hand in sight, you see the reality. You see the entire panorama. It is not cumulative – you just relate to the baic reality.

The view of the panorama, is without experience, in contrast to touch... so what substantiates sight? What takes it out of the realm of imagination and puts it in the realm of reality? The answer is that the view is enabled by your prior knowledge that there is a First Being... And if you have the prior knowledge, why do you need sight/chochmah? The answer is 'revelation'/gilui – the sight is the view of the 'infinite' in a worldy level...

The infinity is seen in the fact that a tree can create an infinite number and variety of leaves... there is no limit... this is the revelation of infinity in a finite context.

In sight you see something is real because the First Being is represented there. Sight is the revelation of the First Being.

If you have binah without chochmah then you have nothing. This is a worldly perspective without any sense of reality.

“No Process” p:72(15)

AyinBase / Ayin Beis with R' Paltiel 18 Kislev 5775

Page 72(15)

At about 4th line from end of top paragraph – (line begins: 'ule-atid...') For text see below.

There is light that is like the essence. What is recognized is the light not the essence of the light. Then there is the issue of Torah and souls – they are rooted in the essence of the light and are therefore the exception.

The world is here because God wants it to be. This is seen in the fact that matter cannot be destroyed. This is the King's decree. And it comes down to a very limited discrete level, but it is never finite! There is infinity in the finitude...!

“Each Leaf” p:72(15)

AyinBase / Ayin Beis with R' Paltiel 17 Kislev 5775

Page 72(15)

Near top of the page – about 14th line – (line begins: 'ubemevuar...') For text see below.

We are discussing the point of 'the essence of light' (etzem ha-ohr), and saying that although light is a revelation, there is an essence element in light.

The principle element of Godliness is not that it creates world. It does not capture its principle identity.

Worlds are not essence. They are a functional/structural presence. But they do reveal light...

One can delve into the structure of the world, till you reach the end of it, and see it is based on truth... The structure of a table is not based on the floor and gravity, but rather on the human truth...

Torah and souls are rooted in the essence of the light.

There is untold variety in the world. Each leaf is unique. Each leaf is contained within the essence of what this tree can produce. There is no limit. And each leaf correctly represents this tree. And each leaf points to a slightly different aspect.

This is why we say that in Israel and souls is absolutely everything. This explains how the Torah was given to a small nation in the desert, yet is carried through into the present in a state of freshness and good health...!

“Nothing to Know” p:72(15)

AyinBase / Ayin Beis with R' Paltiel 16 Kislev 5775

Page 72(15)

Near top of the page – about 10th line – (line begins: 'aval...') For text see below.

Talking of the essence of light... the light in the world is not based on itself, but on its Creator. Essence of light is something that is created by the will of its Creator. To define it from the perspective of function or contribution is folly. It is there because the Creator wants it to be there.

The human being is an 'in your face' example of this. He is phenomenal. There is no way to explain a human being from a natural perspective. The human stance is from above. Its not due to his own experience and being. His real being is what is assigned to him.

Essence is a Godly gift. It is not part of the world. The world does not maintain itself. It exists due to the divine will, on a constant basis. This is what is reflected in the word essence, which cannot be understood, since it remains in the realm of the Creator.

“Reality & Perception; A Tree Grows” p:72(15)

AyinBase / Ayin Beis with R' Paltiel 15 Kislev 5775 (Today's Extra: See poem and original artwork below)

Page 72(15)

Near top of the page – about 7th line – (line begins: 'be-etzem...') For text see below.

The Rebbe is explaining that although there is a process that allows us to get to know that which is above being dressed in the world... it is applicable only in the 'spreading light' and not in the 'essence of the light'.

There are things we sense that defy understanding.

Essence can be recognized, but never understood.

The light as dressed in vessels can be understood.

We can understand that part of the human being that comes to expression. And we can recognize a reality in a human being that is beyond understanding.

In essence there is no 'knowing', since 'knowing' is applicable only to that which has limits.

The world may claim that the human being comes from a monkey. But ask any man, “do you really think you came from a monkey?” and you will find none that answers in the affirmative, even though he may have long given up in identifying in what a human being is in a positive way... this is like negative knowledge, he does not know what a human being is in a positive way, but he says he is not an animal.

We have been robbed of our initial truth. We have been taught not to trust our initial truth... The simple truth of man and the world is that they don't exist, except for the fact that they are created, yet for us it is a whole struggle to sense this. You have to rise to chochmah and extricate yourself from physical constraint, but in essence our simple truth is chochmah/wisdom, which tells you, “you and this world are the ongoing creation of the King.”

We see it and refuse to accept it.

Detail from a Persian Minature done by Yitzchak Bloom, using charcoal

Chochma is a faculty of the soul. It cannot be perverted. It sees the world and sees it is His palace – a reality. A tree grows because it is part of the whole reality, not due to a struggle to survive... Chochmah sees this is a creation and thus everything has its place and mission.

This chochmah, as pure as it is can only perceive hispashtus ha-or (the spreading light) and not the essence of light.

The way out: reflect on this, 'everything is where it should be, where it is to fulfill a Godly mission. Things are where they belong... so too with the natural forces. This is a first step in extricating one self from chochmah chitzonius (superficial mind).

Here's a short poem written and read by Yitzchak Bloom, with preliminary comments by Shmuel Graybar:

And here's the text of the poem...

THE PHYSICAL HAS BLINDED US

The physical has blinded us

To what behind it really lies

For, faced with what is obvious,

We only see what meets the eyes

But miss the fact that there is more

Than meets the eyes; it lies behind

The surface—what its face is for,

So as to seek what’s deep to find.
