We are saying there
are faculties that are included/kollel in the nefesh/soul.
This is in contrast
to saying that the soul 'bears'/noseh faculties, which means that it
is identified through its faculties.
The soul is engaged
in every action and relates to it. This means that the action can be
traced back to the soul/nefesh. The soul gives life. Life cannot be
obtained by force – it is there because the 'life-giver' is there
and relates...
The soul/nefesh is
not composite even though it kollel/includes faculties.
There is a level that
is not 'essence of the soul' and it is here that the soul can relate
to faculties and focussed action.
Any action done
without engagement is not called a faculty.
The soul is a G-dly
presence. And this G-dly element has been bestowed to it... and the
soul has an infinite G-dly capacity.
You might think that
soul can now function independent of its source... but no... the
source made the soul and defined a purpose for it... a purpose that
is beyond the soul itself... a purpose that sets the soul on a
path... and you may think this purpose reduces the soul's infinite
quality... but no, this purpose gives the soul a greater dimension,
so that it is representing Him...
Man's definition is
the 'why he is here'. This is the essence. This level of essence
does not exist within the worldly context because the world is not an
essence...
If you don't engage
your essence, and you submit yourself to the world, you will
blind yourself. Your soul will be in captivity.
There is an inherent
reality in a person that enables him to have faculties. Every human
being has this essence. It can be hidden by not lost...
In the essence there
is no light. In the soul there is light. Why? This is because the
soul has an inherent definition – it is the essence of life.
Essence per se is beyond definition. It is not identified
with any content.
