In order to facilitate the creation, which is ‘something from nothing’, and the created cannot understand the Creator, there had to be a reduction of light in the source to the level of ‘I want to make a creation’. 

The reduction of light in the original level is the start of relating to a new creation.

The process of creation has to start within the Source.  It cannot just start at the point of creation.

If not for the reduction of the light the process of creation could not have started.  

The process of reducing the light alludes to the possibility of the creation of distinct entities.

Understanding emanates from wisdom/chochmah.

Understanding/binah remains connected to its source.

Understanding becomes its own level, but it does not claim independence from chochmah/wisdom.

A home is the constant in human life.  The home goes along with him wherever he goes.  This is called an emanation - a constant presence. 

Wisdom/chochmah is all light.  It does not seek substantiation or proof.  Bimah/understanding works with definition and proof.  It is imperative for life that a person have chochmah/wisdom.  

Wisdom receives from the Source of life, and it is fine with that.  It seeks not definition and proof.

For understanding/binah to surface there has to be a reduction of the light of wisdom/chochmah.

And it all starts within chochmah/wisdom, which has the ability to reduce its light.  And this gives binah/understanding of where it came from.

If the focus is on structure it might be high, but not focused on light…

Chochmah is higher since it perceives via light, and by contrast the level of binah perceives via structure.  

And this is revolutionary, since in this world light is ignored.

And binah is a derivative of chochmah.  Chochmah allows for binah.

From the restraint and reduction of light within chochmah/wisdom, the binah/understanding emanates…

We are talking about ‘higher and lower’.  You may think ‘higher’ means closer to the source.  

But the Rebbe is insisting that we understand it from a different perspective.  Not relative to the source, but from an essential perspective.

More or less light is what is relevant rather than proximity to source.  Mind/sechel consists completely of light/ohr.  

Sechel is higher not due to closeness to source, but because it has more light.

Mind is higher than emotions because they have more light.  But from an essential perspective they are equal.

Speech is a reflection of an emotion.  It is not the full impact of the emotion.  The more it ‘comes down’ the more the light is reduced.  A reduction into speech is a lessening of the light.

When the emotions are strongly aroused, there is no ability for speech.  Only when the emotions are more contained is there the ability to talk.

And in speech there is a reflection of the light of the emotion that shines through…

A home reflections the person who lives there.  When he is present in his home you have his full impact.  When he is not in his home a reflection of his presence is felt.  

Chochmah/wisdom is higher and there is less ability to say anything about it!  [and for this reason it can easily be dismissed, and people say, ‘what are you talking about…?!’ because it is above speech and definition.]

Yet the wisdom itself does contain an aspect that will come out into articulation and communication.  Binah/understanding, joins chochmah/wisdom in its place.

Contained in a concealed way.  

Certainly there, but not seen overtly - it does not speak for itself.  and this is the principle of ‘reduction of light’ [miyut ha-ohr].

In binah there is understanding/apprehension - this implies grasp.  The topic is grasped by the person - in a worldly setting…

Chochmah is higher than this.  it is above grasp - above understanding.  Yet, still there is indeed the level of knowing [yediah]. 

A metaphor for this is sunlight.  Objects are ‘just there’ when illuminated in sunlight.  

In the world of understanding/binah the light is reduced, and things are there by means of proof and definition.  

This is like a legal ruling [psak din].  

And inside, the practical level of ‘what do I do’, and the legal ruling, and practical comprehension, light persists.

The level of chochmah/wisdom has more light than binah/understanding.

A situation can be illuminated by the sky, or through a window, or through a small opening… Each type of illumination is different.

Daylight is unique.  The original daylight preceded the creation of the sun!  

Daylight is beyond a finite purpose.  It is light that eliminates darkness.  

Compare that to a room illuminated by light coming through a window.  There the light has a function - illuminate this room…  

These 2 levels compare to chochmah/wisdom - truth as it is in its original state, which is beyond proof; and binah/understanding - truth via a window, which deals with function and purpose. 

Light is present at the most practical level.  Binah and all the ‘back and forth’ of legal ruling [psak] is light on a defined level.  

On the one hand a ruling is revealing the decision, on the other hand it conceals all the preceding argumentation is concealed, but the light concealed…

There is a great amount of light in the point that is the origin of chochmah/wisdom.  The impact of the light is overwhelming.  You see the truth even though you don’t fully understand it.

When the light comes into binah it reduces itself - the light becomes obscured…

Comprehension [hasagah] is exclusively at the level of bimah [understanding].

In binah the light continues to shine - it shines broadly - not as a bright point. 

Sechel/mind [in contrast to the midst/emotions] is self-effacing and seeks the truth. 

The emotions experience reality via a window - it has to do with one’s experience.  The light is present, but reduced and the self is an active element.

We are talking about levels of light.  As always, we need to refresh the topic of the conversation.  What is the meaning of ‘light’ as it is used in chassidus and in a general context.

On the first day of creation there was darkness.  Yet it has a Godly content.  The world is not just worldly.  In the darkness it would be exclusively worldly - only known by the physical presence…

The statement of ‘let there be light’ is saying, ‘I don’t want the world to be exclusively world, I want it to represent something of it’s Creator.  Light alludes to something higher’. 

It is in the world, but light is spirituality translated on a worldly level.

Chassidus focuses on this element: how light bears testimony to what it is about. 

The point is what chochmah/wisdom relates to.  It seeks the point or central message. 

Wisdom is based in the human soul.  If you ignore it you can create all manner of chaos, and stupidity.

In wisdom/chochmah the light shines at close range…

The light is apparent - you don’t need to search for it.

At other levels the light is more concealed - less apparent. 

Chochmah is humble.  It doesn’t format what it sees - it doesn’t take it on its own terms - it accepts what it is shown.

It says, ‘I don’t have what’s mine, I have what I am given’.

‘Up and down’ refer to an increase and decrease in that impact. 

A lower level has  a decrease in light.  

In a worldly context the value of each thing and everything you get is determined by it’s market value - what it can be exchanged for…

Great light means you have abundance of that which you cherish.

On the earth you have to cover every step if you want to go somewhere… You can’t go directly from A to B.  In heaven there is a direct connect and a unity that combines the whole world.

That’s why the Baal Shem Tov says, ‘a man is where his will is…’

We are interested in how Godliness comes to the world.  The kav brings the Godliness in a measured fashion.  With the creation of distinct levels…

And each point on the kav carries the original message.

Yaakov and Israel are two names for the same person.

Yaakov/Jacob relates to the level of testimony.

Israel relates to the level of essence. 

This corresponds to the levels of betrothal and marriage/consummation.
