The Rebbe says that a spark that separates from the torch, is of the same 'material' as the flame, except that the flame is attached to the torch and the spark is disconnected.

The flame of the torch illuminates. The spark, by contrast does not illuminate.

On the other hand the spark identifies itself, while not illuminating the surroundings.

Think of the sun and its light, in contrast to the fire and its light. Sunlight is of a different quality from light created by a fire. We sense that the candle constantly works to illuminate. Sunlight by contrast if effortless. It comes due to the sun 'being there'. This is the benefit we receive. How it occurs is a separate issue.

Daylight/sunlight is a transformative light, that experiences no opposition.

God said, 'let there be light', and there was light.” This is indicative of it being beyond process. The verse is saying that 'light' is an actual creation, and is no the result of a sequence of events. It has no opposition. It is transformative.

This essential light was subsequently invested into the sun. It was done so as not to overwhelm the world. This provides us with a worldly explanation, while the quality of the light remains...

This light exists only in the presence of the sun. Daylight is announcing the presence of the sun. The sun was made to 'rule the day'. It has full jurisdiction.

Sunlight has the quality of being connected to its source.

The spark does not illuminate. It just tells you there is a spark, without illuminating its surroundings. To illuminate it needs to have a base, like a flame on a wick.

The vessels/keilim are likened to the spark. They are made of the same material as the light itself.

One may think a big flame contains many sparks, but a spark is separated from the flame.

What is a word? Each word is a representative... it contains a message that is beyond the word. Only human beings are called 'medaber/speaker'. The fine song of birds are not called speech. This is because, the human word has a sound, a form, and a meaning, but its main effect is an allusion to something beyond words. Soul in words. That is only found in the human being.

This is the phenomenon of keilim.

The greatness of man is that he has a soul. But greater still is his ability to speak and reveal this soul.

We are talking about keilim/vessels. On they one hand they are a perfect fit with the light, yet they are in a different category. Vessels are a new creation, made to be separate and distant from the light.

Vessels are present in a different domain.

So on the one hand they are separate on the other we say the vessels of atzilus also qualify as Godliness – not described as new separate creations...

We talked about ha-arah, which is a reflection. It is a limited element of the thing on a functional level.

And in atzilus there is a situation of the infinite light in the form of vessels...

Vessels are like a spark that separates from a flame... and the spark is of the flame, yet it separates from the flame and does not illuminate like the torch from which it came.

The spark reveals its own presence. It does not illuminate its surroundings...

It separates from its source and does not have a lasting presence.

We are talking of the Godly light.

Light stays connected to the source. Vessels are separate and provide a challenge to the light.

For the light to come there it has to be seen that light too has the ability to be in a strange environment. Keilim/vessels are creations that remain at a distance from their source. And this is enable to successfully import the light to a new strange place.

The vessels of atzilus have the qualities of atzilus wherever they may be. They are 'literally Godliness' (elokus mamash).

Spirituality and Godliness are different realities. Spirituality (ruchniut) has a basis and a means by which it is experienced. Godliness has no basis, no beginning, and no source.
