The union of the body and soul is facilitated by the body's submission and surrender of its nature. It becomes sensitive to the soul's sensitivities.

And from the perspective of the soul, the union is manifest by the recognition that even in its most supreme level its desire is to burn up into G-dliness... so the soul is oblivious of world and body altogether... it grasps G-dliness without parameters and becomes imbued with oneg/pleasure, because this is more than 'knowing about something', it is a relating to truth and the fact that there is no grasping... it perceives the incomprehensible! And that state you would think is completely divorced from the body.

The soul at essence seems to be moving away from the body, relieving itself of the bodily constraints... yet still it is not totally severed from the body... it remains with it... this is the elment of hisyashvut / settled presence.

This, contradictory state of the soul is like the 2 meanings of the word kalah/bride. On the one hand it implies going out and being consumed in something higher and also phonetically the sound of the Hebrew word for prison – locked in. So in the state of overriding desire he still has the state of being bound below.

When the soul is in a settled state in the body, then there is 'light of the soul'. This occurs when the body provides no resistance. Then the light of the source is present.

This is like chochmah/wisdom sensing at the level of 'because it is there', rather than 'cause and effect'.

The light of the soul allows for correct correlation and real chochmah/mind/intelligence. 

Chochmah is ratzon/will at the body level.

Chochmah is like sight. Sight is a chochmah experience at the physical level.

And for there to be situation that the tzurah/form overcomes the chomer/material is by means of the essence of the soul specifically.

The supreme quality of essence is similar to the difference between chochmah/mind and ratzon/will. Essence is not a function or an experience.

We can grasp reality by means of its dimensions – chochmah relates to reality by means of this orientation. Ratzon/will just sees reality itself.

Ratzon does not work with dimensions, but there is a realization. It is not just the simple reality because it is real. Essence of soul is not a realized reality – this is G-dliness. It has no requirements or parameters. Ratzon has parameters. Oneg/pleasure too. Essene of the soul has no parameters. This is what can bring about the subservience in the material and in everything else.

Nature is all about 'cause and effect'. 'When I become aware of something without a cause, that is not natural'. 'I want the host with me when I am a guest at someone's table. Why? No reason, just a soul truth...'

Light is present only where it is allowed to be. No obstacles.

The body 'finds out' about things. The soul is different. It experience things without needing to know, 'how it found out'. Life does not go through this process.

The principle of the soul joining with the body is the form/purpose superceding the chomer/material.

This is like the hand which has no inclination of its own and does not resist at all the faculty of writing that animates it... thus the faculty is present in a settled way and the body does not fight against the soul that animates it...

In this way the light of the soul can be revealed in the body. Just like for light to flow, there must be no obstruction and no resistance and thus it arrives in peace.

So too in sechel/mind there is the argument and then there is the light of the mind, where the perception of how it is, and how it should be does not need argument or proof, rather a light of perception and reality.

For the light to shine there must be no resistance from the body.

The fact that the soul can give direction to the hand, and that the hand follows, is called absolute subservience. 'I write a letter, without thinking about the lines and the actions, because the hand follows the direction without resistance'. The faculty of writing is in a settled state in the hand.

The calm is when the nature is not opposing the soul. The body calms down and the soul is settled and revealed in the body. This is the principle of hischabrut/union. The body does not act independently and has no tendency of its own. And now the soul can remain revealed in the body. When you look at him you see soul not body.

We are saying that there is a 'super reality' in the soul that causes all the faculties to come forward into revelation and be connected with the body. There is no greater descent – to come down from an essential state into a functional state.

What is the spiritual aspect of the soul's connection to the body? How does this occur? There is the process and there is the result. The Rebbe explains that this represents the supremacy of the form over the material.

In simple terms the tzurah/form is the spiritual, and the chomer/material is the physical.

Chomer is a 'real tangible' presence. And tzurah is 'a concept'. A sack of gold is real. The ownership is intangible. It does not affect the material. And the material affect can be overpowering, 'hey, take the gold, no-one sees you...!' But instead we say let's choose the tzurah and not lie.

Let's say you force yourself not to steal and take someone else's goods. This is not an illustration of 'hisgavrut of the tzurah al ha chomer', since there is an ongoing battle, not a transformation.

The goal is not forcing the body to act in a certain way against its will/nature. The force of the soul over the body is more transformative.

The body becomes a vessel for the soul. For example the hands are not just moveable body parts. Each has 5 fingers and they divide the power of the hand to allow for refined and fine expressions... if you wear a mitten your hand is protected, but its range of expression is limited... it is as if the hand is no longer a vessel for the spiritual faculty...

each person has a unique finger print. If he cuts his finger, after the healing the fingerprints return unharmed – the material is completely under the control and direction of the form. The material has no 'interest' of its own except to be a vessel for the tzurah/form.

The tzelem/form represents an effect of the essence of the soul/etzem hanefesh. This etzem is the very fact of the soul – not an effect.

This presence of the essence, enhances the other faculties.

These faculties of the soul are embedded into the body is such a way that they can function through the body – this is a miracle. How can faculties of the soul act through the body?!

How do they correlate?!

This is due to the preeminence of the tzurah/faculty/form over the chomer/material. The material, 'couldn't care less, but the form has an important message'. The design rules the material.

The vessel/material becomes subservient to the form, until they unify and are one. The form becomes a settled presence in the material which is dedicated to receive it and fulfill its purposes.

Due to this co-operation the light of the soul will be revealed within the body.

This is almost like the body sensing what the soul wants...!
