Essence is truth itself. It precedes creation. It cannot be described in worldly terms.

There is a 'coming into being' from the essential light (ohr atzmi). That which comes into being is not a different presence from that which bring it about. It is an essence. The created has an element of truth on par with that of the creator. This is like fathering a child.

This applies also to the 'creation' of souls.

The souls' presence is the aspect of the inner essentila light. This is the essence representing itself. The Rebbe brings this in Tanya, 'He blew into him a soul of life' and how blowing is different from speaking...

Blowing comes from the inner force.

It is the souls of Israel that bring a true Godly presence into the world.

The angels burn up in their love and fear of God, yet they can only bring out the external union – a union between the Creator and the created, not an inner union that is 'essence to essence'.

When Israel does a mitzvah it is not to fill a lacking – it is an essential Godly command – and by this they draw into the world the inner essential union.

When we received the Torah we said, 'we will do and learn' (na-aseh and nishmah). The action preceding the understanding. And this is an ongoing principle even after we learn His Torah. This is because what you relate to via your understanding is a relative truth that fits into worldly existence. The reality is 'essence to essence' and this is when we said, 'we're in! - we will do and hear – we will go into reality that is beyond definitions – a fundamental reality!'

This is related to by the essence of the soul, not the intellectual and emotional levels...

If not for the souls of Israel, there would not be a drawing forth of the essence lights at all...

The essence is categorically beyond any kind of presence and representation.
