Like a Rock p: 44

At the beginning to the maimar – there are 2 ways things can be affected. Physically and spiritually.

The physical way of affecting things is a metaphor for the way things come from Above. This is like conception and birth, where a new independent entity, with an aspect of the father is created.

The soul by definition has faculties, but they have not been defined. This touches on the essence of what the soul is and this is what creates the faculties.

Hidden faculties are different from the essence itself. The essence is not involved with affecting anything. The essence is self-contained, but the essence nevertheless contains within that limitless truth, 'faculties' as part of the essence. For us an essence is disinterested in anything beyond itself. Like a rock. This is why the physical world is rooted in essence. That's what it represents. But it represents it only in a limited way.

P44, AyinBase, Rebbe Rashab

Essence is self-contained not because it is insensitive. The reason it is 'not interested' is because it lacks nothing and is a full presence. Physicality is an allusion to the real thing, and things are sensitive to each other since they are precarious. We are in a physical world.

A rock is invulnerable but it doesn't stand for anything. Essence is the real truth, not 'that which happens to be'.

The reality the rock represents is essence. essence/etzem is a truth that permeates everything.

Etzem/essence is not just talking about itself, 'i'm invulnerable', but it represents a truth that is infinite.
