We have explored how shefa/flow is different from ohr/light. Shefa is part of the essence.

Think of the stone being thrown. Once in flight the stone moves independently of the arm that threw it. So to with the mentor/mashpia – the student receives what his teacher gave him and 'runs with it'... he now can move forward independently. This is shefa.

Ohr/light is different. The body is continually dependent on the light that emanates from the soul. It does not have independent life.

There is an advantage of light over shefa/flow. The light is by definition cleaving to its source. If it becomes detached it would not exist. Shefa by contrast does not have this element of continual attachment, as seen in the example of the stone in flight – it moves independently.

There is great value in being attached to the source itself. The power that carries the stone in flight did not initiate its movement itself. It came from the hand that threw it. It lacks the initial impetus.

Ohr by contast has the advantage of continually being connected to its source. It is representative not of light per se, but of that which creates the light...
