“Dirah/dwelling
place”, pertains to the essence, rather than to the functional
elements...
Essence
is not manifest in any particular function.
The
Rebbe is explaining how, as a result of the work with, and perfection
of the animal soul, essence is given a dirah/dwelling below...
And
for the animal soul, it involves perception beyond experience.
When
the animal soul is purified it can say, 'all of these things I am
involved in are not the real thing...!' And when it reaches this
point it brings 'dirah betachtonim / dwelling place in the lower
world'.
This
is due, not to the animal soul's faculties, but due to its
humility/bitul.
The
metaphor for this is 'the talking bird'. Or the king and the simple
man; or the scholar and the simpleton...
A
real king is the essence of his nation. Avraham Pariz said, 'it is
more important to have curtains on the Rebbe's window than to have
milk for your children'. Saying that every last detail of a king is
more important than the greatest issue of the common man...
So
the common man brings some kind of novelty to the king... for example
a 'talking bird'.
This
is like the animal soul saying, “I should want essence, I will
mimic the Godly soul rather than remain within my own reality...!”
And
the king's heart turns when he sees the 'speaking bird'. He sees the
bird is wanting to forgo his own interests and wants to be greater,
even if just to mimic the human being... He sees, 'yes, this is a
simple guy, but there is something very unique about him...'
So
too by means of the humility of the animal soul (which is a total
novelty), the animal soul gives up his own experiences to want
Godliness (even while it is beyond his capacity), and this is very
dear in the eyes of God. And by this the essence is drawn...
