The Rebbe is making a distinction between the 'parsa' (curtain) and the tzimtzum. Both are a means to enable the Godly light to descend and relate to the worldly presence... Godliness is primary – a presence that is not the result of any kind of activity – it is beyond understanding and grasp.


Tzimzum involves a removal of the light which is then re-introduced. So the reality of the light is removed but the message remains. In parsa the reality of the light 'takes up residency'.
