All work/avodah is for the purpose of drawing into the Garden of Eden and then into the world, additional lights.

Light is a direct impact of reality itself. Not a distant gleam. Rather the effect of a presence.

How do you increase light? This is by means of the work of birurim/purifications, which rises to the level of 'crown'.

This is represented in the sacrifice of the Red Heifer.

It takes place at the edge of town. Outside of the Temple and outside of the city of Jerusalem.

The body of the Heifer is burned down to ash. The ash is representative of the essence itself.

Same applies to the evil inclination. It has form and essence. The form is the expression – the will, 'mind' and emotions on the side of evil.

The form needs to be broken till only the ash remains. This is the simple essence of the faculty of desire, without any design.

And this simple essence is essentially a Godly creation and can be transformed to holiness.

It is just a force of desire, without any design, and hence can be used on the side of holiness, so that there will be a powerful drive to Godliness.

In fact Godliness – with its limitless depth – is the fitting goal for this essential longing.

This is why Elazar [not Aaron] was the one to do the work of the Red Heifer. Elazar means 'God helps'. To leave impurity and turn to purity, an assistance is needed from Above. It cannot be accomplished alone.

The ashes are mixed with 'living water' [water from a living well-spring].

Water indicates chochmah/wisdom/inspiration.

Water flows. It is not solid. It flows directly from its source. Living waters indicate the source of wisdom.
